現在、世界各地で砂漠化が進行しています。
湿潤気候である日本では馴染みのない自然現象のため、あまり知られていない現実かもしれません。
しかし一部の地域、特にアフリカ諸国などの乾燥地帯、中国やインドでは、人々の生活に影響が出るほど深刻化しています。
日本のスーパーには世界各地から輸入した果物、野菜、肉や魚が並びます。
もしその輸入食料を自国で生産するとしたら必要になる水の量を、「ヴァーチャルウォーター（仮想水）」と言います。つまり、間接的に輸入している水の量ということです。
■ ヴァーチャルウォーターの例 (※1)
– キウイ1つ：70リットル
– オレンジ1つ：141リットル
– パイナップル1つ：752リットル
日本はヴァーチャルウォーター輸入国ランキングで2位になります (※2)。水資源が豊かなイメージのある日本ですが、果物1つをとってみても外国の水を大量に消費しています。
ヴァーチャルウォーターの分だけその土地の水は枯渇し、最終的には植物が育たないような土地の不可逆的劣化（＝砂漠化）に繋がっていくのです。
本作品のタイトル『141.3ℓ』は、オレンジ1つを育てるために必要な水の量です。それは、積み上げたジョウロに入る水の合計でもあります。
この地球上にはいま、 スーパーに行けばオレンジを何個も買える人々と、何時間もかけて水を汲みにいっても不衛生な水しか手に入らない人々が共存しているのです。

■ Concept Statement
Desertification is advancing worldwide. In Japan, a country with a humid climate, this natural phenomenon may not be well-known. However, in some regions, especially arid areas like African countries, China, and India, it has become severe enough to impact people’s lives significantly.
Japanese supermarkets display various fruits, vegetables, meat, and fish imported from around the world.
The amount of water needed to produce imported food domestically is referred to as “Virtual Water.” In other words, it’s the indirect amount of water imported.
– Examples of Virtual Water (※1)
One Kiwi: 70 liters
One Orange: 141 liters
One Pineapple: 752 liters
Japan ranks second in virtual water imports (※2). Despite Japan’s image of abundant water resources, even a single piece of fruit requires a significant amount of foreign water.
As much virtual water is used, the water in those lands dries up, ultimately leading to irreversible land degradation—desertification—where plants can no longer grow.
The title of this artwork, “141.3 liters,” represents the amount of water needed to grow one orange. This amount equals to the total water in a stacked watering can.
Today, on this planet, there exist both those who can buy oranges in supermarkets and those who spend hours fetching only unsanitary water.
